The Unfortunate Events Series
The Unfortunate Events series is a series of children’s novels written by Lemony Snicket. The novels follow the orphaned members of the Baudelaire orphans as they are relocated from their home in France to live with their distant and eccentric relative, Count Olaf. Olaf soon begins to scheme to gain control of the Baudelaire fortune, which he believes is rightfully his.
The first novel in the series, The Bad Beginning, tells the story of how Olaf takes advantage of Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire while they are living with him in his mansion on the coast of Florida. In addition to various scams and false promises, Olaf murders one of the triplets and tries to eat another.
The second novel, The Reptile Room, finds the Baudelaires moving into Vile Village, where they are constantly harassed by Constance Beauregarde and her brother Dr. Montgomery Montgomery. Again, Olaf gets involved; this time he poses as a charity worker in order to take over Vile Village’s library.
The third novel,, The Wide Window, finds the Baudelaires stranded in Peru after escaping from Dr. Montgomery’s clutches. Here they meet Quigley Quagmire (who may or may not be a real person), do odd jobs for Piotr Quirke (who may or may not be a real person), and try to find a way back home.
The fourth novel, The Miserable Mill, finds the Baudelaires living in Lucky Smells Lumbermill after being forced to leave Peru. Olaf once again becomes involved; this time he is playing the role of manager for Count Olaf’ssecretive business venture.
The fifth novel, The Austere Academy, finds the Baudelaire orphans attending Prufrock Preparatory School. Here they are constantly humiliated and tormented by the headmaster, Mr. Poe. In addition, Olaf makes another attempt to take over their fortune.
The sixth novel, The Ersatz Elevator, finds the Baudelaires stuck in an elevator that is descending into a mysterious underground lair. Here they meet Quigley Quagmire again and discover that he may not be a real person at all.
The seventh and final novel in the series, The End, finds the Baudelaire orphans finally escaping from Count Olaf’s clutches and returning home to France.
Plot summary

Characters
When her parents die in a car crash, teenager Violet Beauregard moves from the bright lights of New York City to the sleepy town of Peculiar.
